About The Lady I Met at the Gym

I was in the locker room of the gym changing back into my “day clothes” after a quick workout. An older lady was sitting on the bench near my locker. She looked very serious as she was sitting there tapping and scrolling on her phone.

I noticed she had an old gym bag that said Aruba on it. I was in a chatty mood and since I was in Aruba less than a year ago and about to go back soon, I commented on it.

The stern-faced lady looked up, her face softened, and in a thick Spanish accent she went on for approximately 15 minutes about all of the places she had traveled in her lifetime.

Aruba was nothing compared to the beaches of Thailand and Costa Rica and the streets of Dubai and Egypt. She listed so many places so quickly I honestly couldn't even take it all in!

I wasn't ready for such an earful of amazing information – not to mention, the fact that a lot of what she was saying came out in Spanish.

But what I did get from her speech was what she said last. She made an “O” with her arms as she tried to translate “hot air balloon” from Spanish to English and then made noises of planes as she told me to travel and do as many things as I can.

She said to live my life now while I'm young – to do as much as I could! She had a bad back and said that she can't travel as well as she used to because she gets tired quickly.

Her eyes lit up as she told me she began taking piano lessons two years ago and recently took up guitar. She was so proud of her new hobbies.

I may have heard wrong, but I'm pretty sure she said she wanted to go to space when she was 120 years old – sort of like a last hurrah. But first, she has to visit Greece and Africa.

She was so full of life. I felt like I had opened a magical box and magical gold streams just overflowed out of it, lol.

When I left, I felt so rejuvenated and motivated to make every day awesome!

Sometimes I feel regret about not starting hobbies I love sooner in life but stories like this let me know I'm on the right path :)

I wish I could share more of Maria with you, but I hope this was enough of a peek into the light that this woman radiated. I'll be watching for her at the gym and I'll be sure to report back here after our next encounter.
